Reducing font transfer size

I was just running a GTMetrix report on my homepage, just to see where I could improve some low hanging fruit.

I noticed my page size is 5.56MB, of which 4.46MB is transfer of the Notosansjp font. In addition, it seems to be transferring this same font, twice! Any ideas what's going on here, or how this can be improved?

I think those are the different weights used
  • That typeface seems to be a pretty big file size just looking at it from google fonts

So it would actually be even bigger if you used more than the two weight settings I think

Ah yeah the two weights makes sense. But the large size seems excessive ! 🤯

I'm using another font on the page too (Poppins) and that ain't even showing on that list. Assuming the size of that is much smaller

That just appears to be the size of the typeface

I downloaded it as well as nunito to compare
  • Noto Sans JP's folder is 49MB while Nunito is 2
  • Each weight file is 5MB lol though they're not woff2
  • Thankfully toddle uses the better format which is smaller

I never thought about it but I guess languages with a much larger character set make for bigger files lol

Yeah... will investigate the other Noto Sans variations. Didn't even click when I chose the one I did that it would be full of Japanese characters 🤦‍♂️

I had never thought about it until now so you are not alone in that one

Now I'm reading into it to see if there's any way to 'deal' with that when working with Asian languages but it just seems like as far as web goes, justa kinda SOL lol

Yes font download size is almost always overlooked and can have huge performance implications.

I mean I’m aware of file sizes but I had never seen Asian language ones. 9-16MB files are normal 🤯
